Tranquility, intimacy and sanctuary for the Elm & Willow house
‘Tranquility, intimacy and sanctuary’ were on the owners wishlist for the restoration and extension of this Edwardian house in Melbourne. Architects Eat took up the challenge with the intention to make the addition as open and transparent as possible, as a contrast against the introverted existing Edwardian house. The decision to retain two mature Elm and Willow trees resulted in a suspended U-shaped structure with a north-facing courtyard in between. The concrete floor and roof slabs were meticulously detailed to appear and feel light, floaty and airy.
